Which Version of EverWeb is For You?

EverWeb is available in the following versions:

• If you are running OS X 10.10 or macOS Yosemite, El Capitan, Sierra, High Sierra, Mojave or Catalina, EverWeb version 3.1 is available for you.
• If you are running OS X 10.7 – 10.9 (Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks) EverWeb 2.9.1 is available for you.
• If you are running OS X 10.6 EverWeb version 2.5.2 is available for you.

When updating to EverWeb 3.1, the update process will automatically download the correct version of EverWeb for your operating system.

How To Update To EverWeb 3.1

You can easily update EverWeb by either:

1. Launching EverWeb then going to the EverWeb menu at the top of the screen and selecting ‘Check for Update’ or by
2. Downloading EverWeb from the EverWeb website.

After downloading EverWeb, double click on the EVERWEB.DMG file. A window will open. Drag the EverWeb icon on to the Applications folder icon. Once the file has been copied, you can close the installation window, delete the .DMG file and eject the EverWeb disk on the desktop by dragging it to the Trashcan.

Remember, you won’t lose any previous data when updating as your website project files are stored elsewhere on your computer.

The update is free for EverWeb + Hosting users and EverWeb Standalone users who are within their 1 year of free upgrades and support period.

You can easily check your EverWeb Standalone free update period from EverWeb’s Preferences window or from your client area.

If you have passed your one year of free EverWeb updates, you can purchase 1 more year of upgrades and support from your client area.

You can easily re-download earlier versions of EverWeb from your client area if you are not ready to purchase an additional year of updates and support.

Login to your client area and go to the ‘Manage Product’ page. On the left of this page, select ‘Downloads’ and choose the version of EverWeb that you need.

If you use EverWeb’s Contact Form Advanced widget in your website, you will no doubt be interested in the updates to the widget in EverWeb 3.0.

The highlight of the latest EverWeb update is the debut of the Contact Forms Enhanced Addon giving you customer management features such as storing customer form submission data safely and securely our servers that can be used at a later date. There is also the option for your customers to upload files to you using the contact form, again safely and securely.

The other major feature of the updated Contact Form Advanced widget is SPAM protection in your forms using Google’s reCAPTCHA tool. reCAPTCHA is a free to use tool that helps protect your contact forms against SPAM.

But there is even more that is new in the widget with 12 other feature additions that make will make your contact form even more versatile and professional than ever. In this two part blog feature, we take a deep dive in to these 12 new features…

Classic or Modern Form Style Options

You can now choose to style your from with either a ‘Classic’ or ‘Modern’ style. By default, contact forms adopt the Classic style where the corners of the form’s input fields are rounded. If you use the Modern form style, these corners become right angled edges. You will also notice a different style if your form uses dropdown menus. Here, the Modern style displays menu items without the usual gradient background, and the dropdown selector button on the right of the control inherits the ‘Accent Color’ of your macOS as defined using your Mac’s System Preferences->General option. You may also notice that the font and size of the dropdown is larger when using the Classic style as opposed to the smaller font size used in the Modern style.

New ‘Selection List’ Control Type

A new Selection List field has been added to the Control Types dropdown menu. The Selection List does exactly what its title implies, it lets you create a list from which you can choose one, or more, selections. To use this control type:

1. Add a new control using the Add button in the Form Controls section of the widget, or click on a form control in the list to select one that already exists.
2. Set the Control Type as ‘Selection List’ using the dropdown immediately below the ‘Add’ button.
3. Add the choices you want by using the ‘Add Option’ button below the Options List.
4. Remove any of options you have created by highlighting the option(s) you want to delete then click on the ‘Remove Option’ button. Note that you will not be asked to confirm the deletion when pressing the ‘Remove Option’ button. It is also worth remembering as well that you cannot undo this action if you delete an option by mistake.

When using the form, users can select more than one option. To select a continuous block of options, select the first option in the list that you want. Next, hold down the Shift key and click on the last option that you want. All the options between the first and last will be selected. If you want to select options that are in different places in the list, select the first option in the list then hold down the Command key and click on each of the other options in the list that you want to select.

New Import Text Files Into Form Controls

If you have a large number of list options that you want to add to a control, you no longer need to use the Add Option button to add each new list option one by one. You can now bulk import your options via a preprepared text file instead in to any control that supports the ‘Import Text File’ feature, To import a text file:

1. Open your word processor application and create a new blank document.
2. Enter your options on a single line. Separate each option with a comma.
3. When you are finished, do not include a comma after the last option entry.
4. Next export the file as a plain text file e.g. in Apple’s Pages select File-> Export To-> Plain Text…
5. In EverWeb, add the control type that you want e.g. a selection list, checkbox or radio button.
6. Click on the Import Text File button and choose the plain text file that you exported out from your word processor.
7. The Option List will be populated with the list from the plain text file.

New ‘Placeholder Text’ Field

The new Placeholder Text field lets you add your own default text into either the Email, TextBox, Text Area or URL fields. The Placeholder Text disappears when your visitor starts typing in the field. If you want to change the characteristics of the font of the Placeholder Text, you can do so by changing the fonts for ‘Form Fields’ in the Fonts and Sales section of the widget. However, remember that this will change the look of all the form’s fields.

New ‘Hide Control Label’ Option

Our users asked for more control over their contact form’s control labels, so we added an option so that you can hide the control label if you do not want it displayed on your form. Just toggle the ‘Hide control label’ checkbox field as you want to show or hide the control label.

Updated Fonts and Styles Section

The Fonts and Styles section of the widget has been expanded so that you can now set the style of Control Labels and Form Fields. The Description field has been renamed ‘Control Description’.

In addition to these new features, this part of the widget settings adds a ‘Control Spacing’ field where you can set the vertical spacing between each control. If you want to control spacing on a per control basis, select the control you want and use the ‘Control Padding’ field in the ‘Control Section Options’ section.

The second new option is ‘Max Control Width’. This is an option that you may have noticed in other widgets in EverWeb such as the FlexBox widget. This option allows you to specify the the maximum width that the control can be. This is a useful option when you are working with a responsive page and do not want control options to be too wide on your form when on larger screens.

We can hardly believe it ourselves, but EverWeb celebrates its 6th birthday next week! It’s been another huge year and it is always a perfect opportunity for us to thank all of our customers and third party providers for your continued loyalty and support over the last year!

The last year has truly been phenomenal for EverWeb! Here’s a round up of the last 12 months in the world of EverWeb!

Responsive Website Design Comes To EverWeb!

Last November, EverWeb 2.8 was released with the most asked for feature… Responsive Web Design. Integrating Responsive Web Design in to EverWeb took time to perfect as we were determined to make its implementation as simple, as easy and as ‘EverWeb’ as possible. We’ve been thrilled by the reaction from our customers whose feedback has helped us refine and improve responsive web design in EverWeb 2.9 and in the recently released EverWeb 3.0.

Tools such as ‘Show on device’, breakpoints, rulers, maximum width and page margins are just some of the options added since EverWeb 2.8 and we have more enhancements coming over the next year!

New and Updated Widgets

Each year brings lots of updates for EverWeb’s built in widgets and this year was no exception! The introduction of responsive web design meant that most of EverWeb’s widgets gained full width capability. As always, key widgets gained new features. The PayPal e-commerce widget gained product image and product description fields making it easier to add products to your page. There’s also a great new styled button so you can create your own pay buttons on the fly! And, of course, many other minor feature enhancements too numerous to mention!

The Contact Form Advanced widget goes from strength to strength! The Contact Form Enhanced Addon was the big news letting you manage the customer data that you receive from your contact forms. There were also other important new features introduced such as reCAPTCHA anti-Spam support, a new styled button, new placeholder field, a new Selection List control, text file importing for lists and much, much more!

The introduction of responsive design in EverWeb 2.8 also saw the introduction of Responsive Row, Responsive Image Gallery, FlexBox and Text Section widgets to make working in a responsive design environment even easier. Each widget has gained new features over the last 12 months making them more versatile with each EverWeb release.

As well as EverWeb’s inbuilt widgets, third party widgets from Roddy McKay’s EverWeb Widgets and the new EverWeb Galleries website continue to expand the possibilities of what can be done with widgets.

Widget and Asset Organization

EverWeb introduced Widget Organization in 2.8 so that you can organize any third party widgets into categories. This means that it’s easier to organize and find the widget you want quickly. Adding and removing third party widgets from the Widgets tab has also been made super easy.

After the Widgets Tab update, the Assets List was updated in EverWeb 3.0. The Assets List is now faster and more responsive than before and now allows you to create folders and sub-folders to organize your assets just how you want.

Blogging

Over the last year, blogging has also been updated in a number of ways. Firstly with the introduction of responsive web design in EverWeb 2.8, blogging also became responsive enabled. Further updates have added blog pagination buttons for the blog main and archive pages as well as the option to add a ‘Hero’ image cover to posts displayed on the main and archive pages. Blog posts themselves also received the cover image treatment! We also added draft mode for blog posts, which was a popular request, so that you can choose not to publish a post that is currently ‘in the works’. Bloggers can also now set the post date/time as the publish date time.

Contact Forms Enhanced Addon

One of the highlights of EverWeb 3.0 came with the introduction of the Contact Forms Enhanced Addon. This new tool allows you to collect customer data from contact form submissions. The data is stored on EverWeb’s secure servers. You can download the data collected for use e.g. to build a list of newsletter subscriber email addresses, analyses survey datas collected in your contact form and so on. The possibilities are almost limitless!

The new Contact Form Enhanced Addon also allows your contact form users to upload files to the EverWeb servers where you can easily download them.

EverWeb’s Contact Forms Enhanced Addon is super easy to set up and use, just a couple of mouse clicks is all it takes!

The new Contact Forms Enhanced Addon is a great new feature in EverWeb 3.0 that lets you manage your customer form submission data and file uploads all in one convenient place. We have put together a Q&A on Contact Forms Enhanced Addon (CFE) to answer some commonly asked questions…

Q. What is Contact Forms Enhanced Addon?

The Contact Forms Enhanced Addon (CFE) allows you to capture customer data and file uploads from your website’s contact forms. Your customer data and files uploads are easily accessible from your EverWeb Client Area. You can download your data to a CSV file as well as download any files uploads your customer has submitted to you via the Contact Form.

Q. Which Contact Form Widgets Can I Use CFE With?

A. The Contact Forms Enhanced Addon is for use only with the Contact Form Advanced widget.

Q. How can I purchase?

A. There are two ways in which you can purchase CFE. The first is by going to your EverWeb Client Area. From the Services menu select Order New Services. On the left hand side of the next screen select the option for Contact Forms Enhanced. Order the CFE plan that suits you, then proceed to the checkout.

Q. Are there different CFE purchase plans available?

A. Yes, you can choose either a 1,000 form submissions with 1GB file upload plan or a 10,000 form submissions with 10GB file upload plan. Each plan can be purchased for a one, two or three year renewable period. Purchases of the 2 or three year plans are discounted over the yearly plan rate.

The second way to purchase CFE is directly from within the Contact Form Addon widget. After adding the widget to the page in your website, click on the dropdown menu of the Contact Forms Enhanced Add-ons field. Choose the menu option ‘Add Contact Forms Enhanced Features…’. Follow the instructions to complete your purchase.

Q. I’ve purchased CFE but I don’t see it listed in my CFA.

A. If you cannot see the CFE Addon lived in the Contact Forms Advanced widget, quit EverWeb then relaunch the app, then check your contact form again to see if the Contact Forms Enhanced Add-ons field shows the option for the CFE.

If it does not, check that you are signed in to your EverWeb account using the EverWeb-> Preferences menu. If you are not signed in, you will not see your purchase listed in the Account tab.Once you have signed in, you should see the Contact Forms Enhanced Addon listed.

If you still have issues, please contact EverWeb Support for more assistance. In your EverWeb Client Area, select the ‘Open Ticket’ menu option.

Q. Can I duplicate a form that already uses Contact Forms Enhanced?

A. Yes you can. Once you have duplicated the form, be sure to rename the ‘Contact Form Name (Online Management)’ field so that you can distinguish the two forms from each other. This is important when viewing contact form data in your EverWeb Client Area.

Q. What is the maximum file upload size allowed?

A. The maximum size of a file upload from a Contact Form is 1MB.

Q. What happens if I add or delete fields in my form?

Any fields that you add to, or delete from, your form will appear in the form submission data. You will not lose any form submission data if you change your contact form at a later time.

Q. Can I use CFE on more than one form?

A. Yes. You can use the Addon on as many forms in your website as you want. Each form should be uniquely identified, though, using the ‘Contact Form Name (Online Management)’ field

Q. Can I use CFE on more than one website?

A. Yes, CFE can be used on all websites that you build under your own EverWeb Customer Account Name.

Q. How do I add file uploading to my form?

A. In the Contact Form Advanced widget, add a new Form Control using the Add button below the Form Controls list. Name the control as you want then set the Control Type to ‘File Upload’. The widget will update in the Editor Window to display a ‘Choose File’ button. Remember that you need to make sure that you have purchased CFE and selected it in the Contact Forms Enhanced Add-ons field of the widget. If you select the File Upload Form Control without this set, you will be asked if you wish to purchase Contact Forms Enhanced Addon.

Q. How do I access form submission data and customer uploaded files?

A. You can access your form submission data and any file uploads from your EverWeb Client Area. Once logged in to your Client Area Home page, click on the ‘View Form Submissions’ link in the left hand column of the page.

Q. What about GDPR?

A. You should mention on your website that you collect and  store data from your contact form(s).  This is basically the same approach as to when you receive an email which is also stored on a server with the user data.

Google’s reCAPTCHA is a great tool to use to help verify legitimate email senders so you stop receiving bot generated unsolicited email messages such as unwanted advertising, phishing scams and malware. reCAPTCHA is now available in EverWeb 3.0!

How Does reCAPTCHA Work?

Google’s reCAPTHA tool works by using advanced risk analysis techniques to tell humans and bots apart.

Why Does EverWeb Use reCAPTCHA v2 and Not v3?

reCAPTCHA is available in two versions: Version 2 and Version 3. Both versions are fully supported by Google. EverWeb uses reCAPTCHA version 2 as reCAPTCHA version 3 is a power user tool that for most purposes is not suitable for use most websites.

Setting Up The Contact Form in EverWeb

You may want to start by adding the Contact Form Advanced widget to your page in your website project if you have not done so already. Customize the form as you want. Note that when you add reCAPTCHA to your contact form that it will be placed after your Form Controls and before your ‘Submit’ button. You cannot change the alignment of reCAPTCHA in the form or the fonts that it uses.

Setting Up Google reCAPTCHA

There are two ways in which you can set reCAPTCHA. You can go directly to the Google reCAPTCHA website or you can use the ‘Sign Up for reCaptcha v2’ button in the Widget Settings tab of the Contact Form Advanced widget.

1. On the home page of the reCAPTCHA website, click on the ‘Admin Console’ button.
2. If you are not already logged in to your Google account, you will be asked to sign in. If you do not have a Google account, you can create one from this screen. If you do not see a ‘Create Account’ link, click on ‘Use Another Account’ and then select ‘Create Account‘.
3. Once you have logged in to your Google account, you will be taken to an overview screen of your sites that are currently using reCAPTCHA.
4. Click on the ‘+’ button to register a new website for use with reCAPTCHA.
5. Complete the ‘Label’ field. Enter a label that is easy for you to identify which website this is for.
6. For the ‘reCAPTCHA’ type, click on the ‘reCAPTCHA v2’ radio button.
7. You have three options to choose from. It is recommended that you use the ‘I’m not a robot’ Checkbox.
8. In the Domains section, enter the URL of your website to the right of the ‘+’ button e.g. www.mywebsite.com.
9. As you are already logged in to your Google account, you probably will not need to add a new Owner unless you want others to be able to access and administer the website’s reCaptcha.
10. Check the field to Accept the Terms of Service then click on Submit to finish.
11. If you have filled in the form correctly, the Site Key and Secret Key will be created.
12. Copy and paste each key, using the Copy key in reCAPTCH, in to the relevant field in the SPAM Protection fields of the Contact Form Advanced widget in EverWeb.
13. The Contact Form Advanced widget will update and you should see ‘I’m a Robot’ in the reCAPTCHA dialog box in the contact form.
14. Once you have finished, you can preview the page, to see the reCAPTCHA working. If you find that the reCAPTCHA does not work in Preview, publish your website to test that it works correctly.

Troubleshooting reCAPTCHA

Usually you will know if there is a problem with the reCAPTCHA as you will see error messages in the reCAPTCHA dialog box in the Contact Form Advanced widget in the Editor Window. Here are a few troubleshooting tips:

1. Wait a little while. Sometimes it take a little time for the reCAPTCHA to update. This may mean that initially you see an incorrect message when nothing is actually wrong. It’s just slow to update.
2. Check that your contact form is set up properly. It is always a good idea to make sure that your contact form is working correctly. Uncheck the ‘Use reCaptcha SPAM Protection’ field, then publish and test your form. When you submit the form you should receive an email of the completed form. If not, you may need to troubleshoot your form before looking at the reCAPTCHA.
3. Re-paste the Site and Secret Keys. Sometimes you need to repast the keys again in to the contact form. When doing so, delete the contents of the reCaptcha Site Key and Secret Key completely in the Contact Form. Always use the Copy command from reCAPTCHA to copy the keys. This is the best way as they keys are very long, so you want to make sure they are copied and pasted properly.
4. Regenerate the reCAPTCHA keys. Sometimes you just have to regenerate the keys in reCAPTCHA then re-copy and re-paste them in to the contact form.

EverWeb 3.0 adds important new features to the Contact Form Advanced widget such as Spam protection using Google’s reCAPTCHA. a styled Submit button and a new placeholder text field. The widget also takes EverWeb and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) to the next level with the introduction of the Contact Forms Enhanced Addon.

Why Use Contact Forms Enhanced Addon?

Contact Forms Enhanced Addon allows you to create a database of contact information from the contact forms visitors to your website have submitted to you via the Contact Form Advanced widget. 

This information is stored securely in your EverWeb Client Area where it can be easily accessed and downloaded in to a comma separated variable (CSV) file.

The Contact Forms Enhanced Addon is a great way to keep important customer information gathered by the Contact Form Advanced widget in one place. For example, the email addresses gathered from the contact form could be used as the basis for a mail shot to existing, or potential, customers.

The replies to questions on your Contact Form could help you better target specific groups or market segments. Or you could use the email addresses gathered so that you could send a regular newsletter to your customers via, for example, MailChimp. There are numerous possibilities.

Contact Forms Enhanced allows you to set up each Contact Form with a unique name. This is perfect if you have more than one contact form in your website, or where you have an EverWeb account that has multiple websites attached to it that each has its own contact form. The unique name property of each contact form will keep your contact form response data properly separated.

In addition to CRM features, Contact Forms Enhanced allows visitors to upload files that you can download safely through through the Contact Form Enhanced area of your EverWeb Client Area.

Setting Up Contact Forms Enhanced Addon

To use the Contact Forms Enhanced Addon, start by either going to the Widget Settings of the Contact Form Advanced widget on your page, or add the widget to the page and style it as you want.

If you have not already purchased the Contact Forms Enhanced Addon, go to the ‘Contact Forms Enhanced Add-ons’ dropdown menu in the Widget Settings and select the ‘Add Contact Forms Enhanced Features…’ option. A dialog box will open with an option to ‘Buy Now’. Click on the button and follow the instructions to complete your purchase. Click on the ‘Learn More’ button to find out more, or the cancel button if you do not want to continue.

Once you have completed your purchase, you will receive three emails:the first confirming your order, the second confirming your payment then the last informing you that the addon has been set up and is ready for use in the Contact Form Advanced widget.

To activate the Contact Forms Enhanced features go back to your form. Click on the ‘Contact Forms Enhanced Add-on’ field’s dropdown menu. You will see the feature enabled e.g. you may see something similar to ‘Contact Forms Enhanced – 1GB (12345)’. If you do not see this, close and reopen the project file and try again. If this does not work, check that you are logged in to your EverWeb account using the EverWeb-> Preferences -> Account menu.

The Contact Forms Enhanced addon is now working. It is usually a good idea to name the form in the Contact Form Name (Online Management) field. This will help you easily identify and manage your form submissions if you have more than one form that uses the Contact Forms Enhanced Addon e.g. ‘Join Our Newsletter!’

Adding File Uploads To Your Form

If you want to include a file upload feature on your form you can now do so. Add a new field to the contact form by clicking the ‘Add’ button in the Form Controls section of the widget. Name the control as you want and set the ‘Control Type field’ to ‘File Upload’. The contact form will update to display a ‘Choose File’ button.

Publishing Your Form and Checking Form Submissions

Once you have set up the contact form, publish the website. Test the form to make sure that everything works properly before ‘going live’ with the form. In this way you can test that the form submissions are working correctly.

Once you have submitted your first form, you should receive an email confirmation in the mailbox of the email address that you stipulated in the ‘Email Address to Send Form to’ field of the contact form. 

The email confirmation will contain a link for you to follow to login to your EverWeb Client Area so that you can manage, search and export your form submission data. 

You will also be able to download any files that have been sent to you via the contact form. The email will also display information about the number of forms that have been submitted and the amount of server space already taken by any file uploads.

Form Submission Management, Reporting & File Uploads

Apart from clicking on the link in the email receipt, you can also access form submissions directly by logging in to your EverWeb Client Area. On the home screen you will see the ‘Contact Form Submissions’ section on the left of the window. Click on ‘View Form Submissions’ to access the form submission data.

The ‘Contact Form Enhanced’ page will be displayed with a summary at the top displaying the number of forms that you have using Contact Form Enhanced, the number of form submissions and the server space used by any file uploads. 

To view your form submissions, click on the ‘Please select your form to access its submissions’ dropdown menu. A list of your forms will be displayed. highlight the form you want and then click on the ‘Select’ button.

You will see the forms that have been submitted displayed. If you want to export the whole list click on the ‘Export’ button.

Use the Up/Down arrows next to any of the column headings to order your form submissions based on that column.

You can search the list too, just enter in the criteria you want and press enter e.g. you could select ‘2019-07’ to select all forms submitted in July 2019.

At the bottom of the page, you can select how many form submissions per page that you would like to see. The default is set at 10, but you can also choose either 25, 50 or ‘All’.

If you want to select all the forms in the list you can tick the empty box to the left of the column headings. Check this box again to deselect all form submissions. 

To select a custom list of form submissions tick the box next to each form submission that you want. Beneath the form submissions per page line, you can export (as CSV), or delete, your selected form submissions using the ‘With Selected’ box.

How To Update To EverWeb 3.0

You can easily update EverWeb by either:

1. Launching EverWeb then going to the EverWeb menu at the top of the screen and selecting ‘Check for Update’ or by
2. Downloading EverWeb from the EverWeb website.

After downloading EverWeb, double click on the EVERWEB.DMG file. A window will open. Drag the EverWeb icon on to the Applications folder icon. Once the file has been copied, you can close the installation window, delete the .DMG file and eject the EverWeb disk on the desktop by dragging it to the Trashcan.

Remember, you won’t lose any previous data when updating as your website project files are stored elsewhere on your computer.

The update is free for EverWeb + Hosting users and EverWeb Standalone users who are within their 1 year of free upgrades and support period.

You can easily check your EverWeb Standalone free update period from EverWeb’s Preferences window or from your client area.

If you have passed your one year of free EverWeb updates, you can purchase 1 more year of upgrades and support from your client area.

You can easily re-download earlier versions of EverWeb from your client area if you are not ready to purchase an additional year of updates and support.

Login to your client area and go to the ‘Manage Product’ page. On the left of this page, select ‘Downloads’ and choose the version of EverWeb that you need.

The introduction of responsive design to EverWeb in version 2.8 resulted in the creation of four new widgets to take full advantage of the new scaleable page layout. Many of EverWeb’s existing widgets and features were also updated at the same time to make building responsive pages easy and simple.

The introduction of the FlexBox, Responsive Row, Responsive Image Gallery and Text Section widgets was specifically designed to help you create great looking responsive pages without having to have an in-depth knowledge of responsive design itself.

At first glance, the FlexBox and Text Section widgets may appear to be quite similar to each other. Both widgets allow you to add images, both include the Styled Text Editor for text entry, both allow you to add a button. Beyond these basic functions, the two widgets diverge in to quite specific uses. When building a page, the choice of widget to use will come down to which one best meets your needs. Here is a guide as to which widget is best to use under which circumstances…

When Best To Use the Text Section Widget

The Text Section widget is perfect for when you want to focus on a idea using a single Cover image to do so. This is easy to do. Add the image you want in to the widget. In the ‘Image Fill & Size Settings section, tick the box to activate ‘Use Custom Image Dimensions’ then for maximum impact set the ‘Width’ of the image to 100% and the ‘Height’ to ‘auto. In this way the image will keep its proportions and will automatically scale to fit all device sizes. Add the text that you want in to the Styled Text Editor and you are good to go!

The Text Section widget is also great for creating a ‘Call To Action’ (CTA). A CTA can be a hyperlink or a button and this is where the widget excels. You can create multiple buttons and style them with the just the fonts and colors that you want. If you have more than one button, you can stack them vertically instead of horizontally.

Having the ability to create styled buttons of your choosing also means that the widget can be used even as a form of navigation to different pages in your website as well as being used as a Call To Action.

The Text Section widget allows you to select whichever combination of image, text and buttons that you want.

When Best To Use The FlexBox Widget

If the Text Section widget is the perfect for focusing on one image or idea, then the FlexBox widget is perfect for replicating an idea as many times as you need to by duplicating the Embedded Objects that you create. An embedded object is based either on text, image or video which the Text Section does not include.

In contrast to the Text Section widget, the FlexBox widget allows you to add a hyperlink to an image and set options for what your visitor sees when they hover over the image e.g. you can overlay styled text using one of the five available overlay options.you to add video in the widget.

FlexBox only allows you to add one button for each embedded object that you create whilst the Text Section allows you to create as many buttons as you want. In respect of the FlexBox widget this usually is fine as the purpose of the widget is to allow for replication of an idea or theme.

FlexBox is perfect e.g. if you you want to create short bios of personnel in your company. Create an embedded object with an Object Type of image. For the image you would use a picture of the person whose bio you are creating. Next, add some text about the person and finally add a button to link to a page with more info about the person. Once you have created and styled the Embedded Object, hit the ‘Duplicate’ button and just change the photo and text for the next person’s bio. Finally change the link if needed. Duplicating the Embedded Object helps you save time and effort as you do not need to alter the formatting of the Embedded Object at all, just its contents!

Once you have set up your Embedded Objects you can use the FlexBox’s Wrap options and Control Alignment options to finish off your design. The choice of options open to you really make the FlexBox widget be a true ‘jack of all trades’.

The Choice Is Yours!

Generally if you want to showcase one image or idea the Text Section widget is the one to use. The same is true if you want to use or include more than one button. If you need to replicate a particular format or need to incorporate video, then the FlexBox widget is the one to try first. Ultimately the choice of widget to use is yours and you may still find that you have to try each before settling on the widget that fits your need perfectly. If you are undecided, it is usually best to try the FlexBox widget first.

New Widget Enhancements Coming in EverWeb 3.0!

The new EverWeb 3.0 that is soon to be released will include a maximum content width field for both widgets. The Styled Text Editor has also been updated with a new Remove Text Formatting option and the ability to make the editor window larger for easier text entry. Additionally, the FlexBox widget will include a top and bottom margin fields to the widget.

Responsive Web Design is a great way to build a website in EverWeb that is consistent across all devices. You only need to design one page which will adapt to all device types. You no longer need to develop and maintain separate mobile pages in your website. The trade off, though, is that you have to put more care and attention in to your page design than you might have done before.

When developing your website, it may be easier to think of designing pages for use on desktop computers rather than designing pages for mobile devices. This makes sense, as it may be easier to take objects out of your design as you shrink the page down towards mobile device sizes, rather than adding objects in to the page as you upscale from a mobile page towards a desktop page size.

This design approach is generally fine, but can cause some problems when viewing your page on a mobile device. You may find that the page scrolls horizontally beyond the right hand margin of the mobile device creating a gap to the right of the page.

What Causes The Page to Drift Horizontally?

Ideally, the page should fit the horizontal dimensions of all devices it is displayed upon. The basic problem is that on a mobile device, a desktop page width is being used so the page does not behave in a responsive manner. There are a couple of easy ways to solve this problem which we will come to later, but first, it is important to discuss how the problem is caused in the first place.

Factoring In Minimum Device Width

One important factor to be aware of when designing responsive pages is the width of the smallest device that you are designing for. Typically the smallest device type that your website will be displayed upon will be an iPhone SE. The iPhone SE has a horizontal display width of 320 pixels so when designing your pages consider this value as it will help make your pages fit perfectly on the vast majority of devices, both mobile and desktop.

You usually do not need to consider maximum page width, unless you have objects that are too widely spaced out on the page. Our blog, ‘Using Content Maximum Width‘ delves in to this in more detail as does our video, Content Maximum Width, on YouTube.

When adding full width objects to the page, you do not need to consider minimum device width as such objects automatically scale to the available screen width. However, in some instances, you may need to check that the ‘Full Width’ checkbox is still checked in the Metrics Inspector. The ‘Full Width’ checkbox can become unchecked when using the Responsive Row widget. For example, when adding a full width widget inside the Responsive Row widget (e.g. a Text Section, FlexBox or Navigation Menu widget), be careful to make sure that the ‘Full width’ checkbox is still checked if you still want the object to be full width.

Usually, you do not need to add full width objects in to a Responsive Row widget, but there may be specific instances where you may want to do this.

If the object inside the Responsive Row widget is not at full width, it will actually be a fixed width object instead. So, for example, if you have a FlexBox widget that is 1000 pixels wide, on an iPhone SE you will be able to scroll 1000 pixels horizontally across the page.

To solve this issue, either check the Full Width checkbox in the Metrics Inspector to make the object full width or reduce the width of the FlexBox widget down to 320 pixels or less.

Minimum Design Width For Different Device Types

You may be thinking that objects on your page are now limited to a 320 pixel maximum width. Actually, this is not the case as some widgets will automatically scale content according to the device the page is being viewed upon.

The FlexBox and Text Section widgets are good examples of automatic scaling. For example, in the Widget Settings of the FlexBox widget, set Minimum Width, Default Width and Maximum Width values to ‘100%’ for images. This will scale the image properly on all device types. That is all you need to do!

Using Show On Device For Different Device Types

If you are not using widgets such as those mentioned above, you may need an alternative method to make sure that objects appear at the right size on all device types. This is where ‘Show On Device’ in the Metrics Inspector is very useful. For example, you have an image inside a Responsive Row widget that you want to display properly on all device types. Select the image and make it 300 pixels wide in the Metrics Inspector and check ‘Show on Mobile’ in the ‘Responsive’ section. Uncheck the other three Show on Device options. The image will probably disappear as it is only visible on mobile devices. You can see the image outline by using the Window-> Show Hidden Objects menu. Also, if you reduce the width of the Editor window enough the image will appear.

Add the same image from the Assets List into the Responsive Row widget. This time make it 600 pixels wide. In the ‘Responsive’ section of the Metrics Inspector check ‘Show on Tablet’ and uncheck the other three options. Again the image may disappear but you will see its outline displayed if you have the ‘Show Hidden Objects’ menu option set on.

Finally, add the same image a third time and make it e.g. 775 pixels wide. Check ‘Show on Desktop’ and ‘Show on Wide Desktop’. Uncheck the other two options.

When you preview the page, you will notice that as you shrink the size of the browser window, the image in the Responsive Row will be fit properly for all device sizes, i.e. 300 pixels wide on a mobile device, 600 pixels wide on a Tablet and 775 pixels wide on desktop and wide desktop devices.

Testing Your Responsive Pages

When finished, it is recommended that you preview the page in Safari’s Responsive Design Mode. Safari has possibly the best responsive design browser feature. To enable it in Safari, go to the Safari-> Preferences menu. Click on the Advanced button then check the ‘Show Develop menu in menu bar’ box. Close the Preferences dialog box. You will now see the ‘Develop’ menu in Safari’s menu bar. Use the Develop-> Enter Responsive Design Mode menu option to test your website’s pages against different device types.

Responsive Design can be challenging, but with a bit of thought and creativity, problems such as horizontal page drift can be easily resolved.

It’s been a busy first half of 2019 as there is always a lot going on with EverWeb. We thought we would bring you a round up of the latest EverWeb news all in one place!

The Latest News On EverWeb 3.0

The most current version of EverWeb is 2.9.1 was released back in February. Development of EverWeb version 3.0 is well underway and we hope to have a public beta available within the next few weeks, followed by the official EverWeb 3.0 release soon after if all goes to plan with the beta. Why so long between releases? Well, EverWeb 3.0 packs an amazing amount of new and improved features, such as Contact Form Enhanced add-on, improved asset management, reCaptcha in Contact Forms, blog pagination, lots of improvements to widgets as well as the usual maintenance and bug fixes. We hope to preview more new EverWeb 3.0 features soon, so stay up to date by checking the Announcement Section of the EverWeb Discussion Forum!

EverWeb & macOS Catalina

Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference took place in June 2019 with the usual news of the upcoming features for all of Apple’s software platforms. In respect to macOS, the new 10.15 version, Catalina, was announced. This release is now in its developer and public beta testing phase with a scheduled release this fall. One important feature of the upcoming release is that it adds more security to the OS which means that these changes have to be integrated in to apps such as EverWeb. If you are trialling the beta version of MacOS Catalina, the current version of EverWeb, 2.9.1, will not run. The same will also probably be true of EverWeb 3.0 when it released in the next few weeks. [UPDATED] However, when released, EverWeb 3.0 will support MacOS Catalina when the new operating system debuts.

EverWeb Third Party Website Resources

There are some new EverWeb related third party websites live for you to enjoy. The first is everwebgalleries.com which focuses on the needs of photographers. The website is currently offering two new, free widgets which are currently in beta test. The first is the Categories Image Gallery widget which lets you group photos in to categories e.g. you could have gallery containing black and white photos in one category, color photos in another category and and ‘All’ category that contains both black and white and color photos. The second widget is an Image Carousel, which is just that, a carousel of photos that you define. You can add change the speed of the carousel and the number of images you want to scroll at each turn of the carousel. If you have any feedback on these widgets, just use the Contact form in the About menu of the website.

EverWeb PowerUp is a site that focuses on Theme Templates offering a number of free, and for purchase, theme templates. There are also widgets available including a dropdown menu widget, a cookie consent widget and an image compare widget like those you sometimes see on news websites.

And last, but not least, Roddy at EverWeb Widgets continues to be the foremost and prolific provider of third party widgets for EverWeb. Roddy’s just released a Toolbar widget to help solve the problem of converting your fixed width website to a responsive layout then wondering what to do with the icons for email, phone and social media links?

Updated YouTube Videos and Udemy Course

We are currently updating some of our older YouTube videos replacing those featuring EverWeb’s user interface from before EverWeb 1.7 with the UI of the current EverWeb release. This also gives us the opportunity of expanding the videos to include EverWeb’s newer or improved features at the same time.

You may have also noticed that our video’s Video Poster Images (i.e. the title card) have either a black or blue background. A black background is used for videos about responsive website design features and tutorials whilst the blue background is used for all other subjects in EverWeb.
